When Applying For Jobs Online - Stand Out... EXACTLY!

While surfing the net this morning I came across this exceptional post to help job seekers stand out from the crowd and get noticed by hiring managers. The writer sites credible sources who advise job seekers to "tailor your resume to the company you are sending it to" and "take a careful look at the design and layout of your resume". While these are sage pieces of advice, I can't help but think how antiquated the traditional paper resume has become - especially in a technology driven world. Using paper to represent yourself is dated and virtually impossible to stand out from other candidates - it's time to move forward.

If you were interviewing a candidate, wouldn't you want as much information (before meeting them) as possible? If you could see the candidate, hear how they speak, have them answer several specific questions BEFORE committing to an interview, would it be helpful? Of course!! All the more reason why you should create a professional video resume and market yourself directly to hiring managers.

I've tried to explain to my kids how I used to own a record player so I could listen to music (I didn't dare touch the eight track conversation). As I went into details, it occurred to me how far technology has come and how silly a record player must sound to kids. You can bet that future job seekers will share this opinion on paper resumes. They simply won't understand how people used "paper" as a means to represent themselves.

Companies are savvy and use every possible tool at their disposal to source the best candidates possible. If you have a social media site (and you should have a couple) rest assured that it is being visited by potential hiring managers. Companies seek to hire candidates that "get it" - meaning they understand technology and stay ahead of the curve. Truth is that many people that make hiring decisions have not kept pace with technology and do not fully understand. They want to hire candidates that can help them!
