Where Is The Resume Heading?

Last week I spoke to a national group of search, recruiting and HR professionals in Chicago - this week a different group in Orlando. Everyone is asking the same questions - where is the traditional resume headed? How will the job seeker of the future market themselves? How will this impact my world? How can I keep up!! Many are concerned that if they do not demonstrate (to their existing employer) that they "get it", they may be usurped by younger, more capable talent.

Here's the good news - you don't have to go back to school or breech your comfort zone to get on board! The bad news is that you're going to have to learn a couple new things. I know, I know - we are all open to change..... NOT. To be relevant in today's fast changing world, you have to keep up and understand the basics, which really is not difficult. I mean, come on - look how far you've come utilizing email and the Internet (I bet you resisted both.... at first). Now you can't live without them!

The most intimidating buzzword you've got to confront is social media. I've never seen a better example of a sheep in lions clothing. If you can use email and Facebook - you're in! Take the time to read and learn - better yet, do what I did and find a twenty something to teach you. You will be a virtuoso within 30 minutes (and you'll add security to your job). See - I told you it was easy.

Many of the people I'm speaking to want to lead the evolutionary change of the traditional resume to a professional video resume, complete with links to social media and more. Everyone knows that it's coming and my hats off for their willingness to learn and become first movers.

This week TalentRooster installed two new locations (Phoenix and San Diego) and we couldn't be more happy. Firms in those markets are leading the infusion of resume intelligence and it's fantastic to witness. Ironically, these are not Fortune 50 companies - they are small businesses led by entrepreneurs. Talk to your leadership - the plane is leaving the gate - get on board now before your competitor does!
